“Children are the living messages we send to a time we will not see.” - Neil Postman

I recently came across this quote and it helped me put into words a philosophy that has become central to my campaign: We should live and govern well today, without leaving the consequences of short-sighted decisions for the next generation to inherit.

My Philosophy: Govern for Tomorrow

As a young candidate for Saanich council, I am faced with the consequences of yesteryear. As a mother of two children, I am an intergenerational renter and managing the ever-increasing cost of living in arguably the most beautiful area of Canada.

It's common for municipal decisions to feel small in comparison to those at the provincial or federal levels. However, they are anything but.

The choices made at the municipal level determine:

• The neighbourhoods we live in
• The infrastructure and services we rely on
• The natural spaces we protect
• The taxes and costs the regular household carries, and
• The communities our children will eventually inherit.

Local decisions influence how our region grows and helps shape the direction of government beyond our municipal boundaries.

And that is why I believe good leadership requires a long-term outlook.

Council should resist making decisions simply because they are politically popular in the moment, emotionally driven, or expedient today if the financial, social or environmental consequences will be left to solve tomorrow. Financial prudence is part of that. As is:

• Maintaining the infrastructure we already have
• Protecting irreplaceable natural spaces
• Planning growth with intention, and
• Making sure public money is directed toward the services and investments that provide lasting value.

For me, governing for tomorrow means applying a simple test to the decisions we make today: Are we solving today's problems responsibly, or simply creating a larger one for someone else to solve tomorrow?

It means choosing prudence over impulse, long-term value over short-term applause, and community over competition.

I want to help build a Saanich that works for the people who live here today, while leaving the next generation with sound infrastructure, protected natural spaces, responsible public finances, safe and vibrant neighbourhoods, and a community they can afford to call home.

We will not see every outcome of the decisions we make today - but our children will live with them.

I believe we are not simply governing for the next four years. We are governing for tomorrow.
